Fruit and grape harvesting make it the best time to go walking
The local wines taste especially good with this magnificent countryside as a backdrop. On the western edge of the Black Forest, the vintners once again open their "Straußenwirtschaften" or seasonal wine taverns. Here, you can meet for a "Hock", and enjoy the fruits and gifts from the vineyard, forest and meadow.
To the vineyards!
If you take just a few days off to enjoy a journey of discovery at this time of year you will really reap the rewards. One of the best things to do is to go and discover the sun-kissed vineyards along the "Baden wine route". The 160 km route snakes through all of the farming areas between Baden-Baden and Weil am Rhein.
The experience for active pleasure-seekers travelling on foot is even more intense – for example with the 81 km "Markgräfler Wiiwegli" wine trail, which takes you from Freiburg to Weil am Rhein. Cosy pubs and restaurants are on hand to entice you to take a break and treat yourself along the way.
Meanwhile, the 120 km "Ortenau wine route" runs from Gernsbach in the romantic Murg valley to Diersburg (near Offenburg). The route takes you past vines and forests, and through picturebook old wine villages. Schwarzwald Tourismus GmbH offers luggage transfer for both these walks: Tel. 07721/846415, www.wein-schwarzwald.info and www.wandern-schwarzwald.info
Settling down in a seasonal wine tavern
If you like things cosy and comfortable, then we recommend one of the numerous seasonal wine taverns, which invite you to enjoy autumn hockets with wine and onion tart. These establishments serve produce from their own vineyards together with delicacies from their own kitchens and smokehouses. The other culinary delights on offer are also homemade, and, with true Black Forest hospitality, you are invited to feast like the locals. If you want something a little more substantial, try ordering Bibbiliskäs, Brägele and Schäufele, roughly translated as a kind of white cheese, fried potatoes and a joint of shoulder. The rustic atmosphere ensures a friendly and relaxed time for all. You will feel right at home. For more information, please visit: www.kulinarisch-schwarzwald.info
